About Us

Highland Pines Committee Inc.

The Highland Pines Committee Inc is committed to supporting and empowering the unhoused population in Tampa, Florida. Through advocacy, community engagement, and meaningful partnerships, we strive to address the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals while promoting long-term solutions that strengthen our community.

Founded by David Coronel, the committee brings together dedicated volunteers who share a common mission: to ensure that every person is treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.

By working alongside residents, organizations, and local leaders, we are building a stronger and more inclusive Highland Pines for everyone.

    Raymond Johnson

    President

    Known as "The Great Communicator of Highland Pines," Raymond Johnson is a passionate advocate for the unhoused. Following his outstanding presentation at City Hall, he earned recognition for his leadership and dedication to serving the community.

Accomplishments

What We Have Achieved

  • The Highland Pines Committee on Homelessness helped provide a much-needed bench at the shelter located on Melbourne Boulevard between 48th and 49th Streets, improving comfort and accessibility for those seeking assistance.

  • Founder and Secretary David Coronel met with Dean Lagattuta, Special Assistant Fellow to Congresswoman Kathy Castor, to discuss securing "Lifeline Phones" for unhoused individuals, community members, and visitors in Highland Pines. These phones would provide critical access to emergency services, employment opportunities, and family connections.

    Mr. Lagattuta is currently exploring grant opportunities to support the committee's efforts, and Mr. Coronel plans to address City Hall to inform the public about these initiatives.

  • Committee leaders have addressed City Hall and engaged local residents to raise awareness about the challenges facing the unhoused population in Highland Pines.

  • The committee collaborates with local leaders, organizations, and volunteers to expand resources and create lasting solutions for those in need.

  • Through outreach and advocacy, the committee continues to foster compassion, unity, and opportunities that empower individuals and strengthen the Highland Pines community.

Challenges

Addressing the Needs of Our Community

  • Many unhoused individuals encounter barriers to employment, particularly those with prior felony convictions. The committee is committed to helping community members access job opportunities and regain financial stability.

  • Navigating interactions within the community, especially with law enforcement, can be challenging for many unhoused individuals. The committee works to foster understanding, build trust, and encourage supportive relationships throughout Highland Pines.Mr. Lagattuta is currently exploring grant opportunities to support the committee's efforts, and Mr. Coronel plans to address City Hall to inform the public about these initiatives.

  • The committee recognizes the importance of addressing substance use and related concerns. Members actively encourage individuals to seek support through rehabilitation programs and Narcotics Anonymous while serving as positive role models for the entire community.

  • Many unhoused individuals lack reliable access to communication, transportation, healthcare, and other basic necessities needed to rebuild their lives.

  • Finding sustainable housing solutions and securing additional funding and community support remain essential challenges in helping individuals transition toward stability and independence.
